The little Anterran

The Dark Overlord pays a visit

Page one

An image of an oak tree in a green Californian park appeared to me from the warm darkness of sleep. My vision slowly zoomed in on the tree, until I realized it was Rescue Ranger headquarters. My point of view jumped, taking me inside the treehouse. Isagi and his friends were there, in the main room of the place. The television was off.

All the Rangers were busy doing things, as was their native Anterran. Isagi was meditating, hovering inches above the floor. His eyes were unopened, but he maintained awareness of all his surroundings, even the park outside.

Gadget sat on a blue couch, working on an invention with a screwdriver, fine-tuning it. Her little device was a shallow box with faintly blinking electronics.

Chip and Dale had donned shorts and tank-tops and were exercising on a treadmill.

Monterey Jack was cooking a pot of his (in)famous cheese soup in the kitchen adjacent to the room.

Isagi drifted down to the floor, landed on his toes, and released his concentration. He faced the wall inside the tree, and tilted his head as though he noticed something.

Then my perspective changed. No longer was I looking at the Rescue Rangers, now I was seeing through Isagi's eyes.

To Isagi, the wall didn't exist, he could see right through it. Outside, the sky was bright blue and small wispy clouds drifted in the upper atmosphere. It seemed like a perfect day for birds to sing, but the park was strangely silent.

Suddenly a small glowing sphere appeared in the sky. It was a tiny meteor, no more than three feet across. The crimson satellite fell through the air leaving a sharp trail of white light behind it. It hit the ground, and landed a few yards away from the base of the Rangers' tree.

Inside the tree, the Rescue Rangers were shaken by a sudden boom. Curious to see what happened, they ran outside. A meteor had left a huge glowing crater in the ground. They climbed down their tree, and stopped its base, just to peek into the glowing crater. I didn't notice him do it, but Isagi must have teleported down to the lawn.

While they were peeking into it, several thin streams of blue light came flying from the crater. The beams were solid, and wrapped around Isagi and the Rangers, pinning them against the tree. Isagi recognized the streams of light. They belonged to one of the Dark Overlord's pets.
