I once heard someone- Ken Behram, actually, say that he'd hardly ever seen Rescue Ranger merchandise. Completely believable. Almost none of what was once freely available is today, and even at its peak, RR stuff wasn't spilling out onto the floors of Disney Stores. There weren't even action figures, usually the first thing produced to coincide with a cartoon. So it's surprising, then, just how much did get made. And here's the list.
If dates are of any importance, almost all the goods hit shelves in mid-to-late 1990.
The items are loosely grouped into categories. Most of them are Rescue-Ranger-specific, but there are a few interesting classic Chip 'n Dale items listed. Because they kind of count as consumer products, magazine articles mentioning CDRR are here too.
As probably overemphasized, these items were scarce to begin with. The market isn't getting any larger, either. Most can't be had in retail places where you would normally expect other items of their type; they're in secondhand stores, especially thrift stores, and they're in outlets such as drugstores and factory outlets. (apologetic tip of the hat to people outside the States, on that last one.) RR items not limited to Chip and Dale themselves are even scarcer; they just weren't made. If you're a serious collector, be prepared to look for the rest of your natural life. On that cheery note, let's go!
Tips for getting all McDonald's premiums, follow all McDonald's premiums.
Chip's in a blue teacup with red key propeller. Over him, a ruler stuck on
a pipe. One pair of wheels, orange buttons. Called "Chip's Whirly-Cupter."
Its components are completely described in "Framed."
There are four boxes, actually: Framed, Rollin' in Dough, A Whale of a Time,
and The Yolk's on Him. Each contains a genuine story, very involved for a
Happy Meal box.
The art is generally good, best with Zipper and worst with Gadget, who has perpetual
black nose syndrome. Chip and Dale appear most commonly. The boxes are great fun and
are all original, if not too innovative, stories. All also have lots of pictures of
the toys so you can reassemble them correctly if you get lost. (: On two boxes,
Wart and Snout appear.
In "The Yolk's On Him," Fat Cat steals the golden eggs of Goldie (who, BTW, is
a sort of Lahwhinie to Mrs. Booby,) but discovers they are only golden-shelled.
Art is decent, focusing most on Fat Cat, Chip, and Dale. There are no pictures of
Monty or Zipper, one of Gadget. The punchouts are a sort of flight-attendant badge
and a parrot-feather propeller.
In "A Whale of a Time," the Rangers move in on Fat Cat's yacht to recover
stolen jewels. Art is very good- there are a few gorgeous renditions of Zipper.
Gadget is barely present. Note the champagne-shaped bottle, which appears
three times, and is clearly marked, "Pop." >;)
The punchouts are an anchor-shaped badge and a ship's wheel-propeller.
In "Rollin' in Dough," Nimnul is making an invisible dough. (No, not the Canadian dollar.)
The Rangers set out to ruin his batch of vanishing dough. Art is good here except for Gadget
and sometimes Monty. The punchouts are a beaker-shaped badge and an afterburner.
In "Framed," Fat Cat steals the famous Vincent van Gopher stamp. The embarrassing thing
is that he steals it from RRHQ. (: He then tries to counterfeit it. This box is the
only one with an activity centered around Gadget. Art is very up-and-down, with no
character clearly best-rendered. The punchouts are an artist's palette badge
and a parachute.
Warning- pictures average 100K. All are JPEGs, about 80% quality.

Chip in China, with blue shirt, and yellow pants and straw hat.
It's amazing what seven years of looking will get ya. In Canada recently, I thrifted
a little Dale figurine. It's the exact same pose as the Dale Froot Loops
sticker and as Dale on the back/front/top of the RR Froot Loops box. Its graphic design and colours
exactly match the Dale from the Frosted Flakes figurine series. The figure itself, while
painted only about as well as the Frosted Flakes pieces, is nicely designed and really
kinda poetic. I was ecstatic, thinking maybe I had found a rare Kellogg's premium.
Imagine my surprise, then, when I read the bottom of the figurine: © McDonalds Corp.
So I figured it was an under-three toy (though it seems just about the right size to choke on)
but it's not, and nobody I've talked to knows about it. HELP! If you know the
origins of this confused little figurine, and would be kind enough to
email me about it, I'd be
eternally grateful and you would be ensconced (though perhaps not literally)
in this list for all time.
Thanks to Natasha Kashefipour who was kind enough to venture a guess. (:
And now to get the things.
The cheap and laborious way to get McDonald's toys of any kind is
thrifting. Surprisingly, I most often find RR's there, not in mixed toy
bins, but in bagged assortments. Usually they cost $.50 per toy or bag.
Failing that, there are toy traders who deal in premiums. Prices range from $2-5,
depending on quality and dealer. Some dealers even have the toys still in the bag.
Here is the info for one such dealer, Richard Eymann. I list him because I've
bought from him and am pleased both with the products and the variety;
I know of no one else who specifically has any RR boxes, and have seen few
complete toy sets elsewhere. He has every U.S. RR toy and the Epcots, including
the Canadian Dale. Richard says he has lots of duplicates, as well.
His product lists are consistantly on Usenet, as well as permanently on
www.getnet.com, or snailmail/voice:
As for the rest of the Happy Meal, that can be bought at a surprisingly
high percentage of McDonald'ss's, except for McPizza, which is a regional thing
and may cost extra for shipping. (:
The Trolley is very common to thrift and garage sales, a quarter a pop.
Maps are harder, possibly thrift.
It should be noted that some people are disappointed with these figures.
Frankly, the quality and design aren't great. (Little things, really.
Monty's tail is never painted. Gadget's tail is never there. Ad miniturium.)
I have three Montys, not one the same colour. (: The best piece, IMHO, is
usually Dale.
Boring note ;) : In the advertisement for this toy, Chip looks at a note
which, encoded, says, "Look behind you!" This is the same message (and
ultra-simple numeric code) that was on the Magic Slate proper.
Chip: Bottle opener and saltshaker.
Firstoff, there's no Zipper plush. Sorry. Also,
if you always wanted to cuddle Gadget (go ahead, admit it, you're among
friends,) you won't have an easy time of it. The only stuffed version of her
and Monty follows.
Interesting note: This series appears to have been redesigned. The older set
has: longer tails on Chip and Dale, a thin rope tail on Monty, a shorter
Chip, a darker face on Dale, and no T-shirt on Gadget. The newer set seems
to have: no tail on Monty, tall Chip (finally proportionate to Dale,)
lighter Dale, T-shirt on Gadget.
The object of the game, gameplay, and indeed the design of
the game board, are all convoluted as heck. The presentation is as cheap as
possible, with instructions on the box lid, a generic die, and thin cardboard
game pieces. The game's premise, be the first Ranger to build a magic
machine to stop Nimnul from brainwashing children, is ludicrous.
In short, it's the coolest board game I've ever seen.
I'm told it's an easy game. Save Gadget from Fat Cat's horde of evil minions, etc.
Occasionally found for sale in newsgroups, but game traders and garage sales
are worth a try. Last seen at about $10 US.
Capcom offered a free poster with Rescue Rangers for Nintendo, presumably
with the art usually associated with the game on it. They ran out
immediately, however, and I got a very unimpressive poster, a list of
substitutes if I didn't like it, and a long-distance number to call.
I didn't want my two bucks shipping back anyway.
The rumour I circulated that you could play any of four Rangers in this game
wasn't right. ): I was also wrong about this game being for Super NES-
it's one of the last original NES carts. Sigh...
Try game traders, which are common on the net (watch yourself, though.)
There is a PC game (no, literally, a PC, maybe an XT) where Chip and Dale
save Monty from Nimnul's laboratory. It's by Hi-Tec Expressions. I last saw
it at Babbage Software. It isn't slick. Buy it to say you have it rather
than for challenging game play. Or, small kids love it. I think it
requires CGA.
(shrug) Never sent for it. ):
I've found all these at Wal-Mart, Toys 'R' Us, outlet stores (stationery,)
and thrift.
...okay, so this was a boo-boo on my part. Viewmaster doesn't seem to sell it direct.
But there is a company called World Wide Slides that sells over the Net!
The Gadget and Zipper T-shirt, rarest of the rare but a good rendition.
I think it was pink- no, blue- no... It came only in child's sizes and
was at the Disney Store.
A Chip 'n Dale RR shirt (this one might actually have been official) was
sold at WD World on Ice around 1990. It has the same design both front and
back- CnD running, on a neat sort of starburst of pink and black lines.
Chip and Dale are decidedly orange.
The rundown:
Crime Busters contains "Catteries Not Included" and "Piratsy Under
the Seas."
The following is the info provided me by the Archive's maintainer, most of which is beyond
my analog reasoning.
CnDRR: Danger Rangers/Super Sleuths
Format: CLV
Catalog No. (for unknown distributor:) 618 AS
Probably the easiest CDRR item to find. I know of the following:
Never, ever make this tape the official tape played on car
trips. Small children love the story, and want to hear it over and over and
over... This is a serious mental health risk.
But the book does have one unquestionably saving grace- it has four
collector cards. On the back of the cards are biographies and signatures
for every Ranger except Zipper. For $8-10, even if you discard the tape
itself, those signatures are worth it. Of course, they're
online as well. :)
Best bet for all storybooks: Goodwill. The Big Cheese Caper is a
Little Golden Book, foil spine and everything. Most of the rest are by
Golden also. The hardcover series, though, is by Gallery Books and is often at
drugstores ("Ghost of a Chance is rare.") I found "Rootin' Tootin' Rangers"
again, just a month ago. It was in a toy store with a whole mess of Disney
read-along tapes, relegated to a back corner. I think I saw a Wuzzles book
in there too. ;) Try toy outlet stores as well.
Western put out at least seven coloring/activity books.
There are three coloring books, one puzzle book, one color and activity
book, one sticker-and-coloring book and one invisible ink (mark-and-see)
book. Most are the same size, jumbo (read "normal." :) )
Try drugstores for all.
Rumor has it that there are actually outfits on Gadget that modestly
show off her figure, including a one-piece swimsuit. Anyone who's
seen "Shell Shocked" is a little shocked themselves at this. But it's
a welcome relaxation of the rules. Jeff brought us this one too.
By Disney Comics. CDRR, as it was officially abbreviated, had nineteen
issues. The CDRR graphic novel, The Secret Casebook, will probably
only be at a comic shop; last time I saw it, it ran at its original price of
$5. Later CDRR can be found (with great luck) at toy outlet stores, for 50
cents or even a quarter apiece. The rest are sporadically in comic shops.
Cuter than the proverbial insect's auditory orafice. (:

Premiums
McDonald's RR Happy Meal toys, regular series.
These toys are mix-and-match vehicles, a series of four, each housing a
rodent. According to the in-store toy display ([ Picture: a few weeks
] >;) ) the vehicles are called Gadgetmobiles. (That one's for the
Editor. (: ) The removable parts on each are a rotar/propeller in front or
back, something on top, and the back set of wheels.
Dale's in a yellow measuring cup (1/4 cup, actually) with purple (?)
propeller and green pipe. Removable blue wheels "made up" of nuts, bolts and
washers. Permanent pink bottlecap wheels on a rotating thimble.
Called "Dale's Roto-Roadster." The most complex design, and frankly,
the coolest.
Gadget's in a pink shoe with a light blue pancake turner and green
spoonlike propeller. Yellow Tinkertoy removable wheels. Permanent wheels are
violet and of a component unknown to man. (: Called "Gadget's Rescue Racer."
Monty's in a green phone handset with small orange spatula propellers,
purple fork propeller, blue straight-slot screw removable wheels (easily
confused with Dale's,) and red and black checker permanent wheels.
Called "Monterey Jack's Propel-a-Phone."

All right, so this is post-RR
stuff. There were four sets of a toy and a map, but the ones of interest to
RR fans are the NE corner, which came with Chip and Dale on the Jolly
Trolley, and the SW, which has Gadget and the Go Coaster both on the map and
on a cardboard foldout. The map's rendition, however, is... bad.

are done in the classic learn-to-draw-a-character-book style: Make lots
of lines you'll eventually erase and Chip begins with a pear. Still,
a fun, fun book. It's the largest RR book as well, about tabloid size.

Disney Adventures comics.
Check out RoboNerd's complete list of RR comics from this magazine.
Magnificent.
The magazines are anywhere that sells old magazines, I suppose. But there's
also a series of small books that each contain four Adventures comics from
the same series. They have been confirmed for DuckTales and Talespin but
not RR. The others were seen in paper products discount stores (seriously.)The Classificationally Challenged

Popout pencil case.
You know, those spring-loaded organizers that never work. There was a
Rescue Rangers one- interestingly, Zipper's on it.[ Picture ]

Ala Pee-chee. I saw them free at the local supermarket six years ago.
Just the classic group pose on solid colors. Lunchbox.
Light blue. And red, thanks, RoboNerd. Both the lunchbox and
its corresponding Thermos-oid, Aladdin-brand, bottle show Chip, Dale,
Gadget, and Zipper; Chip is throwing darts at a picture of Fat Cat.
On the bottle, he gets the real Fat Cat on the nose. I found the bottle
at Salvation Army long ago.
RR pencils and toppers.
One pencil topper is Chip, whispering;
the other's Dale, listening. Disney Store merchandise of old. Haven't seen
it since. The pencils, by the way, are just round pencils with the RR
logo printed on them, and are yellow with Chip and green with Dale.[ Picture:toppers ]
Crayons.
A little plastic case, with the classic group pose on it.
One of a large series of such packs of Diz-themed crayons.
Twelve crayons inside with the RR symbol on them. No leads.Collectibles
Classic Chip 'n Dale Christmas ornaments.
You know the
"Disney Holiday Whatevers" collection of 3-D ornaments from Grolier? Just
write and say that you want Chip and Dale alone. To date, they've been
very reasonable about it.[ Picture ]
Classic Chip 'n Dale salt-and-pepper shaker set.
Why, oh why, didn't I get this one? Bradford Exchange, I think. Part of
another Disney series.Food
CDRR fudge bars.
Don't even think it. The bars were Chip- and Dale- shaped with candy (M&M-like) noses.

Fruit snacks.
I- uh, assume they were very... fruity. Ahem. A scan of the wrapper exists.[

All right, so I needed
to make the Food section a little bigger.
Long ago at Disneyland, in Starland days, some restaurants served a kids'
meal in a box. The box, featuring the then-current stars of the DA, had at
least Chip and Dale on it. The box might still be in use, as rumoured...
